History of the Donohoe Clan
The Clan Donohoe (O’Donohoes or Uí Donnchadha) of Breifne were
chiefs of the Teallach Dhúnchadha, which was traditionally a
branch of the Uí Briúin Bréifne, itself traditionally a branch
of the royal Uí Briúin Aí, rulers of Connacht. The Teallach
Dhúnchadha was a tuath which occupied approximately the
territory later known as the barony of Tullyhonoho or
Tullyhunco, which included the parishes of Killashandra and
Kildallan. The O’Donohoes were replaced in the early 1200s
by the MacKiernans (Mac Thighearnán), another branch of the
tuath.
In 1159, the chief of the Uí Donnchadha (first name not given)
is mentioned in the Annals of Ulster as killed while fighting
with the other Uí Briúin Bréifne under Tiernan O’Rourke
(Thighearnán Ua Ruairc), King of Breifne, among troops of
Rory O’Connor (Ruaidrí Ua Conchobhair), King of Connacht, at
the bloody battle of Ferdia’s Ford (Ardee, Co. Louth) against
Moriarty O’Loughlin (Muircertach Ua Lochlainn), King of Ulster
(Ulaid), and from 1156 King of All Ireland, and Donogh
O’Carroll (Donnchadh Ua Cearbhaill), King of Oriel
(Airgailla), which included Co. Louth within its territory.
In 1166 King Donogh of Oriel transferred his allegiance from
King Moriarty of Ireland (causing his downfall) to King Rory
of Connacht, who then became King of All Ireland.
